Welcome to Episode One of the Mixtape Bookclub Podcast!
Do you love Supernatural? Are you a fan of Dean and Cas, and their relationship? Do you enjoy reading Destiel fanfiction? This is the podcast for you!
In this episode, we introduce ourselves and the podcast, and also discuss canonverse fics—that is, stories that take place in the same universe as the show. We review two fics: A Turn of the Earth by microcomets, and The Story of You and Me by the_diggler.

Dean’s your typical half-orphaned, monster-killing 22-year-old until a trenchcoated stranger crashes into his back windshield one September night, claiming he’s an angel that knows him from the future and that he’s on the run.
Frigging fantastic.
(Or, in which Castiel gets stuck in Dean’s timeline preseries and Dean kind of hates it—until he doesn’t.)

Dean wakes up in bed next to a very human Castiel, and a journal in his own handwriting that tells him it’s two years in the future. The house looks a lot like Bobby’s, and Sam lives there too… He just can’t remember how they got from angels falling in the sky – to comfortable domesticity.
While there is much in the journal Dean doesn’t remember, there is much of their story he’s always known. And as he settles into the routine of his new life and relationship with Castiel, it quickly becomes something he doesn’t know how to live without.

I came across this podcast when I was searching for another similarly named spn podcast, and I’m so glad I found your podcast. I didn’t know there’s a podcast about fanfics instead of about the show itself, and it’s just the best thing! I hadn’t dipped into fanfics or fandom for 10 years because life happened, and I miss the easily accessible fandom meta way back when, but a podcast about destiel fanfics is something I didn’t expect and I didn’t know that I need 🙂 Thank you so much for making this podcast, and the fic links! It’s great pointers for me who is just starting to wade through 10 years’ worth of fics. And I love your comments and analysis so much. Thanks again for creating this podcast!

I don’t read very much canon-verse in the SPN fandom, it’s usually only because I can’t find anything else to scratch the itch to read, so I’m excited that the fics you reviewed today are some that I’ve actually read! (And LOVED!)
I’m very amused by ~90k being “medium” fic length. I’d always assumed anything over 50k was considered a longfic, but that may be due to my having participated in other, smaller fandoms. Destiel has a glut of 100k+ fics, and boy are we so spoiled by that lol
Hah, yeah I guess I’ve been reading a load of 100k+ fics lately so 90k doesn’t seem too long, haha!

I enjoyed this. It got me thinking about my own fic tastes.
I’m usually harsh to Sam in my own writing because I see him as a c-block in canon. I often love Sam in the show (when he’s not a dick), and I like him in a lot of fics, but I find him hard to write because I just don’t think about him the same way I do Dean and Cas.
I hate case fics. That’s what the show is for. I prefer the fic I read to focus on the things the show cannot or will not do. You made me eager to read A Turn of the Earth.
You reminded me that I had read The Story of You and Me a while back. That fic made me really angry at canon because Dean and Cas were not “really” together!
I’m looking forward to more episodes!! Thank you both for creating this wonderful content.

I’m excited to learn of this site and I appreciate all your efforts. Perhaps someone here can help me locate a specific Destiel fanfic. I found it through a link to a link and have scoured AO3 and some other sites but to no avail. I don’t recall the exact name of the author, but it was something along the lines of Autumn_black_cat; can’t recall the title either. Kind of a familiar storyline wherein Dean was an undercover cop, Castiel was the person he was investigating because of Castiel’s relationship with Michael, who was a suspected criminal and has disappeared or was dead (can’t recall). Early in the undercover investigation, Dean has to comfort Cas through a pining attack. I’d really like to find it again; the writing was nice and tight and the story just grabbed me from the start.
We’ve just been conferring and neither of us recognise the fic, sorry. It sounds great, though. I hope you find it!

Here’s a pining fic – Suck it, Judy Garland – https://archiveofourown.org/collections/DCPF_2019/works/18086930 that’s also case fic, with a side of jealous!Dean. I also like In this Handmade Heaven https://archiveofourown.org/works/18707920, which is only Dean’s POV, so you don’t get what Cas it thinking. It’s kinda pining, but just in general Dean being super lonely and isolated, but also an AU fic. Handyman/Mechanic!Dean and Policeman!Cas. Always gives me the tingles over Dean’s longing for connection and being valued. Oh, and per your comment about a gym in the bunker, we see it in s14 when apocalypse-world!Bobby is teaching Jack how to box, since he is low on power. It’s “Stranger in a Strange Land”.
